WhatAn infinitely zooming painting by Nikolaus Baumgarten and collaborating illustrators.
Why nowA reminder that a browser can be somewhere to get lost, not just somewhere to get things done.
Statusoriginal online · adapted for modern browsers

Forty-six painted images nest inside one another until the last slips back into the first. Released in October 2004, the Zoomquilt grew from an online scene of artists making collaborative patchwork pictures. Its surreal landscapes are joined by hand, not generated on demand; the pleasure is simply watching one person's world become another's.

Why it still matters

This is an infinite loop without an infinite feed: a finite, shared artwork with no next post to chase. Originally released in Shockwave and Flash, it has been adapted to run in modern browsers. Open it, let the painting unfold, and use the sidebar speed control if you want to slow down or reverse the journey. Contains continuous zooming motion.
