Olia Lialina’s 1996 work uses frames, black space, repeated clicks, and fragmentary dialogue to make a browser behave like broken memory. It is small, severe, and unmistakably web-native: the page is not carrying the artwork, it is the artwork.

WHY IT STILL MATTERSBefore platforms taught pages to behave like product surfaces, artists were testing the browser as a human instrument — cinematic, awkward, intimate, and made from the ordinary furniture of HTML.
Best opened slowly. The clicks are not navigation plumbing; they are the editing machine.
